Mombasa, Kenya: Caribbean Fit Fest is emerging at a time when Kenya’s fitness culture is undergoing a powerful transformation. Across Nairobi, Mombasa, and other urban centers, gyms and wellness communities are multiplying, reflecting a growing awareness of health and lifestyle.

This shift is driven by rising concern over lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, and by the influence of technology, social media platforms and fitness apps have become powerful tools for building communities, motivating participation, and spreading awareness about healthy living.

Women, in particular, are increasingly embracing fitness disciplines, from bodybuilding to dance fitness, signaling a new era of inclusivity and empowerment in the Kenyan fitness space.

One of the most notable grassroots initiatives is the Mombasa Walk Movement, which has captured the spirit of community-driven wellness. This movement encourages residents to adopt walking as a daily routine, promoting preventive health measures and inclusivity.

It welcomes participants of all ages and fitness levels, turning simple movement into a unifying cultural experience. Beyond physical benefits, the walks foster social connection and community spirit, showing how fitness can be both accessible and transformative.

It is within this evolving landscape that Caribbean Fit Fest finds fertile ground. Founded by Pamela Belle-Henry, a dual citizen of Kenya and Antigua and Barbuda, alongside fellow Antiguans Ameekah Jackson and Kenferd Henry, the initiative was born from a vision to bridge Africa and the Caribbean through wellness. Belle-Henry’s upbringing across two continents gave her a rare perspective on identity and culture, inspiring her to create an event that celebrates shared heritage while promoting health.

“Being exposed to both cultures enabled me to identify and appreciate our varying differences and similarities. This has deeply influenced my work by allowing me to immerse myself in diverse cultural contexts and approach them with an open and thoughtful mind,” she explains.

Caribbean Fit Fest is not just about exercise; it is a vibrant cultural exchange. Soca music electrifies the atmosphere, pushing participants beyond perceived limits, while dance and fitness instructors from both Kenya and the Caribbean blend styles, languages, and traditions. The event embodies Belle-Henry’s holistic philosophy of fitness, rooted in her Mind Muscle Journey approach, which emphasizes mental transformation alongside physical strength.

“Fitness goes beyond a well-sculpted physique,” she notes. “Cultivating a positive mindset helps individuals see the endless possibilities achievable with something as simple as a mindset change.”

Despite challenges such as budgetary constraints and limited sponsorship, the team has remained committed to their mission.

“We have not been able to solicit sponsors who could understand and see the vision and benefits of supporting the event, although we face these challenges, we recognized the need to pool together our limited resources to ensure that the event is a success,” Belle-Henry admits.

By relying on community support, they have delivered successful editions that garnered overwhelmingly positive feedback. Each event strengthens the vision of bridging Africa and the Caribbean, proving that wellness can be a powerful tool for unity.

Caribbean Fit Fest also reflects Kenya’s appetite for inclusive, culturally rich fitness experiences. With routines carefully curated to suit beginners, advanced athletes, and those with physical challenges, the event ensures that everyone feels welcome and unstoppable to the infectious rhythms of the Caribbean. Beyond movement, it incorporates language, cuisine, and traditions, making it a holistic celebration of cultural unity.

“Our mission was clear on ensuring that we create a safe space where no one will be intimidated to move while intermingling with people from different walks of life,” She says.

Looking ahead, the team envisions expansion and collaborations that will bring Caribbean Fit Fest to more communities.

“We are currently exploring exciting expansions and are actively seeking collaboration partners who share a passion for fitness and cultural exchange,” shares the fitness guru.

What began as an idea scribbled in a notebook has blossomed into a dynamic annual event, proving that dreams are valid and achievable. By blending Caribbean vibrancy with Africa’s evolving fitness culture, Caribbean Fit Fest is not just an event, it is part of a larger movement toward holistic health, cultural unity, and empowerment.
