Mombasa, Kenya: To strengthen healthcare delivery and expand specialized medical services, Mombasa County has hired 286 new health workers alongside ongoing investments in healthcare infrastructure.
During the issuance of appointment letters, Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir emphasized that maintaining adequate staffing levels is essential for bolstering service delivery. He noted that this hiring initiative forms a core component of a comprehensive strategy aimed at transforming the county’s medical sector by enhancing both facilities and personnel.
“This recruitment is part of a systematic, planned and sustainable transformation of healthcare in Mombasa,” he said.
The governor said the new workforce would help improve access to quality healthcare for residents, including mothers requiring safe deliveries and children in need of urgent medical attention.
County Expands Hospital Infrastructure
According to Nassir, the county has constructed Mjambere Level 3 Hospital, Bofu Level 2 Hospital and Likoni Mother and Child Hospital as part of efforts to bring healthcare services closer to residents.
Construction is also ongoing at the New Port Reitz Level 4 Hospital and Raila Odinga Kongowea Level 4 Hospital. The county is also planning to construct three additional hospitals in Mikindani, Kisauni and Jomvu Kuu, further expanding its healthcare network.
At Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, Nassir said the county had constructed a new cancer centre, a Children’s Intensive Care Unit and a children’s operating theatre.
Construction is also underway on a cancer support centre and additional hospital wards.
Focus on Specialized Care
Nassir said the county’s strategy was focused on developing healthcare infrastructure while ensuring that facilities had qualified professionals to provide specialized services.
“We are building the facilities, expanding specialized services and recruiting the professionals required to deliver dignified and compassionate care,” he said.
He urged the newly recruited health workers, particularly nurses, to serve residents with compassion, professionalism and commitment.
The recruitment comes as Mombasa continues to expand its healthcare infrastructure and specialized services, with the county government seeking to strengthen both the facilities available to residents and the workforce required to operate them.
