Nairobi, Kenya: Residents of Mukuru Kwa Njenga in Nairobi collaborated with advocates and local leaders for a community-led tree-planting and clean-up drive in honor of World Environment Day.

Facilitated by the Jannah Bloom Community-Based Organization (CBO), the program brought together various stakeholders and local youth to promote a more sustainable and greener living environment.

The event featured the participation of Imara Daima Ward Chief Cosmas Kathuku, who lauded the campaign for fostering environmental accountability within the settlement. After an extensive waste removal effort and educational outreach on waste management, volunteers planted a variety of trees including pawpaws at Topline School to bolster climate action and increase local green cover.

Chief Kathuku highlighted that these grassroots initiatives are essential for tackling communal environmental issues and enhancing public health.

The event was graced by Imara Daima Ward Chief Cosmas Kathuku, who praised the initiative for encouraging environmental responsibility within one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements.

Activities kicked off with a large-scale clean-up exercise across several sections of Mukuru Kwa Njenga. Volunteers collected waste from public spaces while educating residents on proper waste management practices and the importance of protecting the environment.

Speaking during the event, Chief Cosmas highlighted the role communities play in addressing environmental challenges and improving public health.

“Protecting our environment is a shared responsibility. Initiatives like this demonstrate the impact communities can make when they come together for a common cause,” he said.

Following the clean-up exercise, participants gathered at Topline School, where they planted many trees including pawpaw as part of efforts to expand green spaces and contribute to climate action.

According to the organizers, the trees will provide multiple benefits, including improving environmental sustainability, enhancing biodiversity, and offering educational and nutritional value to learners and the surrounding community.

Officials from Jannah Bloom CBO reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to environmental conservation, youth empowerment, and community development through sustainable initiatives.

They also expressed gratitude to volunteers, community leaders, partners, and residents whose participation contributed to the success of the event.

As communities around the world marked World Environment Day on June 5, the activities in Mukuru Kwa Njenga underscored the importance of grassroots action in tackling environmental challenges and building resilient, sustainable communities for future generations.
