Nairobi, Kenya: Pope Francis, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has passed away at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed today. The pontiff died at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, following complications from double pneumonia, bringing an end to his 12-year tenure of papacy.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis made history in 2013 as the first Latin American and Jesuit Pope. His leadership was characterized by forward-thinking reforms, efforts to modernize the Church, and a strong emphasis on social justice and environmental protection.

Despite a history of health issues, including bronchitis, abdominal surgeries, and respiratory infections, he remained actively engaged in his responsibilities. His final public engagement was a meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in February 2025.

The Vatican has announced a period of mourning. Pope Francis will lie in state at St. Peter’s Basilica, followed by his burial at Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. The papal conclave, where cardinals will convene to elect his successor, is anticipated in the coming weeks.

Pope Francis leaves behind a significant legacy marked by humility, inclusiveness, and a commitment to social change, having profoundly influenced the Catholic Church’s global presence.
