The Judiciary has embarked on hearing and determining court cases that are older than five years in the court system in a move that will see over 5,000 cases cleared in a period of one month, countrywide.

The exercise that will be done during the service week targets 5,187 matters, which include civil, criminal, commercial and judicial review cases in nine High Court stations in the country starting September 3rd – 28th September.

The cases have been listed before the Judges for hearings, dismissals and/or appropriate directions.

The stations are Meru, Machakos, Kakamega, Mombasa, Eldoret, Nyeri, Embu, Bungoma and Milimani (Judicial Review and Civil Divisions) High Courts.

This is in line with the Chief Justice’s strategic blueprint, Sustaining Judiciary Transformation; a Service Delivery Agenda that undertakes to clear all cases that are older than five years from the court system before the end of 2018.

Chief Justice David Maraga during the launch of the blueprint, promised that the Judiciary will utilize the ‘service weeks’ and the day-to-day hearing arrangements to clear case backlog in the courts.

This comes hot on the heels of the pending case of Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu who is yet to be prosecuted over alleged graft allegations. It is yet to be seen if the wheels of Justice will expedite her case.
